Caffeine and breastfeeding

There is a common misconception that you cannot consume caffeine while pregnant.

This is not true!

Although some caffeine can pass through breastmilk, moderate caffeine consumption is considered safe.

Now, what does moderate mean? Moderate caffeine consumption is 300 milligrams per day according to the CDC. This typically equates to 2-3 cups of coffee. Of course, coffee is not the only form of caffeine, so it is important to consider all sources of caffeine in your diet.

Common sources of caffeine:

  • Coffee

  • Tea

  • Energy drinks

  • Chocolate

  • Soda

Ultimately it is up to you whether or not you decide to consume caffeine while breastfeeding! Personally my morning cup of coffee gets me through the day and helps me care for my newborn when I am exhausted!! You do what works best for you!
