Tips for pumping with elastic nipples
Elastic nipples stretch significantly more than average, and can actually extend past the flange and toward the end of the pump’s tunnel.
Those with elastic nipples will often find pumping to be uncomfortable, or even painful, especially if the nipple is extending toward the end of the pump’s tunnel!
Here are some tips to accommodate elastic nipples and reduce pain/discomfort when pumping:
When picking your flange size, try starting with a flange on the smaller end of your range, as close to your actual nipple size as possible (check out my post on flange sizing if you don’t know how to find your range)
Try flanges specifically meant for elastic nipples. These flanges tend to hold back breast tissue and prevent excessive nipple stretching
BeauGen breast pump cushions are meant to sit inside your flange and help reduce pain and discomfort
PumpinPals flanges are angled and made of silicone to prevent the nipple from extending too far into the flange tunnel (code BREASTFRIEND takes 5% off on their website)
Lacteck flanges are soft silicone flanges that compress around the nipple and areola during pumping and are a great option for preventing pain with elastic nipples
It is also worth trying both silicone inserts and hard plastic flanges to see which are better for you
Lowering the suction of your pump may help to reduce stretching and discomfort
Lubricating your flange before pumping may help reduce soreness and help your elastic nipples glide smoothly in the flange. You can use your own expressed breastmilk, lanolin, nipple butter or a pumping spray
