Tips for using a manual (hand) pump

I am obsessed with hand pumps both personally and professionally!

Hand pumps are a great backup pump to your primary electric pump, and for some they actually work better than an electric pump!

A few more pros:

  • Small, light, portable and easy to travel with

  • Inexpensive compared to an electric pump

  • Doesn’t have a battery so it won’t die like an electric pump

  • Can remove milk efficiently when used correctly!

  • Can be more effective than an electric pump at removing colostrum (your first milk)

Let’s go over some tips for using a hand pump:

  • Just like with any pump, make sure you are using the correct flange size (see my post on flange sizing) you can either buy a new flange or try a flange insert

  • Check the suction to make sure the pump is working correctly

    • With a hand pump, this means checking the valve/membrane or duck bill valve (whichever you use with your pump). If it is worn or damaged it needs to be replaced! If you pump frequently you will most likely have to replace the valve every month!

    • You will also need to ensure the handle is put together appropriately to provide suction! (to see a video demonstration check out this video on using hand pumps)

  • Hand pumps have a “stimulation” and “expression” mode. Start in stimulation mode until you see milk flow and then switch to expression mode. If your milk flow slows or stops during your pumping session you can switch back to stimulation mode to try and stimulate another letdown!

  • Breast compression can be a great tool when using a hand pump! It can increase flow and actually decrease the length of the pumping session! (check out this video for a demonstration of breast compression while using a hand pump)

Hand pumps are also very customizable! When I was an exclusive pumper I was able to customize my hand pump to fit my needs.

Here are a few ways you can customize a Medela Hand Pump:

I recommend hand pumps to every breastfeeding mama! Whether you exclusively pump or rarely pump, they are such a great tool to own! If you can get the hang of using one, they can make such a difference in your breastfeeding journey!
